2018 Subaru XV – the third generation of the crossover

By the way, the United states appear to be the key market for the Subaru XV model (in the North American market it’s the Subaru Crosstrek). From 2013 to 2016, American drivers bought nearly 310 thousand crossovers of the previous generation, while in Europe for the same reporting period, just over 42,000 crossovers were sold. Perhaps, it explains why the new Subaru XV 3 generation visually practically doesn’t differ from its predecessor (American car enthusiasts are very conservative).

It might even seem that it’s a deeply updated version of the second generation Subaru XV. However, it’s a completely new crossover. It features the latest Subaru Global Platform as well as completely original body panels, a gasoline engine with direct fuel injection and a significantly transformed interior with a wider range of modern equipment.

According to the information provided by the manufacturer, the body of the new car was designed from scratch. It’s made of high-strength steel, which enabled to increase the rigidity of the body in torsion by up to 70% compared to the model of the previous generation. Moreover, in case of a frontal collision, the new XV absorbs the kinetic energy of the impact by 40% better.  Fortunately, the accident is unlikely, given the rich arsenal of security systems including Pre-Collision Braking Control, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist, Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection and High Beam Assist, not to mention lane assist systems and systems monitoring blind areas of the rear-view mirrors.

The external dimensions of the body of the 2018 Subaru are 4465 mm in length, 1800 mm in width, 1615 mm in height. Its wheelbase accounts for 2665 mm, the ground clearance is 220 mm. 18-inch wheels with light-alloy discs come as a standard option.

When talking about the exterior design of the new generation Japanese compact crossover Subaru XV, we should highlight the expressive front part of the body with new headlights, supplemented by the catchy LED daytime running lights as well as a solid stern, featuring new tail lights. In general, designers tried to preserve the familiar features of the predecessor in the image of the novelty, and they managed to do it, so that at first sight it’s difficult to find differences.

The salon of the Subaru 3 generation crossover XV, like the body of the novelty also doesn’t look new. It just seems to be modernized. Obviously, the change of generations brought no changes in the interior.  However, to install the new multimedia system STARLINK Multimedia system (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) with enlarged up to 6.5 and 8.0 inches color screens, as well as a modern climate unit, the car maker increased the size of the center console by slightly changing the entire dashboard. The novelty received a slightly updated steering wheel, an instrument panel and a parking brake key.

The increase in the size of the wheelbase gave the rear passengers more legroom. The rear seats have become more comfortable and cozy. Of course, the manufacturer announced higher-quality finishing materials.

A completely independent suspension scheme with McPherson struts in the front and a multilink in the rear – that’s what a new generation crossover inherited from the previous generation model. However,  the damping elements are new (it ensures better smoothness of the suspension operation and higher stability when driving at high speed). There’s more rigid fixing of the suspension parts. The rear stabilizer of lateral stability is fixed directly to the body, which made it possible to reduce the body rolls in corners by 2 times. By simply reducing the gear ratio from 14.1 to 13.1 the car maker made steering more acute. The all-wheel drive transmission Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive received the X-MODE mode (the motor and the stabilization system shift to the off-road driving mode).

Under the hood of the new generation Subaru XV, one can find a petrol 2.0 liter FB20 engine with direct injection of fuel into the cylinders (156 HP 196 Nm) along with the Lineartronic variator.

The weight of the new FB20 motor is 12 kg lighter than the weight of the powerplant of the 2nd generation crossover. With 80% of the original parts, it gained 6 hp, while fuel consumption sank by 10%.
