5 Types of Off-Road Vehicles
For many people, driving off the road is off-limits as it’s considered very scary and dangerous.
On the other hand, car enthusiasts and adventurers love taking risks, and the adrenaline boost pushes them forward. Adventure is in their blood, and the thrill of driving recklessly and discovering new places makes them want to relive that experience.
Although it sounds incredibly tempting, you must take proper precautions before going on such a trip, such as bringing the necessities and choosing the right vehicle.
Choosing the proper vehicle for off-road adventures is essential, as not all cars can endure harsh circumstances. For example, you can’t possibly climb the desert hills with your Prius.
If you suspect that your car was damaged by such practices, we offer free car valuation in Dubai.
Here are some types of off-road vehicles that are durable enough to withstand extreme conditions:
Dune Buggy
Commonly known as beach buggies, dune buggies are recreational motor vehicles designed to traverse sand and beaches. Its oversized tires and front-mounted engine are what help it drive easily through the sand. The lack of a roof is also what distinguishes it from other off-road vehicles.
Dune buggies are stripped off vehicles to minimize weight and increase engine power, therefore increasing the power-to-weight ratio.
Some love building a custom buggy from scratch, while others prefer modifying an existing vehicle. Volkswagen Beetles are a popular choice for transformation since it has a rear-mounted engine.
Sandrails
Similarly to Dune buggies, sandrails are recreational off-road vehicles meant to travel on sandy surfaces. However, they’re strictly for off-road use as they aren’t street legal.
Sandrails got their name because of the exposed steel rails that make up the vehicle’s framework. They’re a bit risky to drive since there’s no cladding to the framework, so wearing goggles is essential to protect your eyes from sand particles.
Sandrails have special wide tires to accommodate driving in soft sands, enabling thrill-seekers to enjoy speed without the risk of their vehicle rolling over.
ATVs
Our favorite ride is here! Most people are familiar with ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles), quad bikes designed to travel on four low-pressure tires. It’s called four-wheelers in some places like Australia. Meanwhile, in Africa, it goes by quad-bike.
Essentially, these vehicles are developed from their beloved ancestor, the motorcycle. According to their technology, they basically render the same. The handlebar steering, drive chains, sitting positions and engine types are all shared features and strong resemblances.
The only thing that differentiates them from regular motorcycles is the number of wheels. Unlike motorcycles, ATVs have four wheels instead of two.
These four wheels provide ATVs more stability in off-road paths than motorcycles, making them safer.
UTVs
UTVs stand for “Utility Task Vehicles” and bear strong resemblances to fellow ATVs, except they’re a tad bigger, and their seats are arranged differently.
They’re side-by-side vehicles, meaning they have two seats, unlike ATVs that feature one seat. They’re also enclosed within a cage structure similar to cars.
UTVs can vary; some can carry two people at most and some 6, depending on the vehicle’s configuration.
Some UTVs consist of a load bin in the back, which is excellent for hunting and agricultural purposes since off-road vehicles are considered a great way to access hard-to-reach farming areas.
Motocross Bikes
These off-road vehicles are designed for specific off-road racing. Riders usually compete in enclosed off-road courses on grassy or muddy roads. The dirt tracks are short and have multiple mud patches, jumps, and ruts to challenge the riders.
Motocross bikes have small fuel tanks, which is why the races are usually of short duration. They also lack the technology for night driving, making them illegal in the streets.
Although off-road vehicles may seem alike, they have some slight differences. So choose wisely before buying!
